The article from the Ancient History Encyclopedia mentions three Papyri in particular which discuss specific diseases and treatments in detail. Other papyri will likely serve as documentation of the linkage between religion, magic, and medicine. The Brooklyn Papyrus describes a group of priests who would treat venomous snake bites and scorpion stings. That contributed to mysticism surrounding medicine which probably explains why it was linked with magic. That being said, without dissection, much of the internal workings of the human body were unknown. On the other hand, however, mummification was an extremely precise procedure when it came to the removal of certain organs and the chemistry of drying the body. The role of physicians socially and even politically will then help me transition into the role of physicians in a religious context.īecause death was so central to the Egyptians, medical research was inhibited by respect for a person’s postmortem body. The archaeological record should be helpful in that regard by looking at trends in lifespan over the course of the Egyptian State. Another aspect to consider is what the education system was with regard to the process of becoming a doctor. On the other side of the coin though, I want to know if regular people had access to Health Care. This sheds some light on where medical professionals may have fallen on the social ladder. He served Djoser, demonstrating that health was important to Pharoahs as early as the Old Kingdom. In my preliminary research I found that the first recorded King’s Physician was named Hesyre. Ideally, I would be able to look at each of these categories individually and break them down into subcategories by time period (probably Old, Middle, and New Kingdoms) I’m sure I’ll have to do my best not to get hung up on the biology side, but I’m interested to see what there is with regard to archaeological evidence. I will break this question down into other categories such as: how doctors fit into the socioeconomic spectrum, how medicine intertwined with religion (and even magic), and treatments they developed for both chronic illnesses and injuries/infection. In my research paper, I would like to answer the broad question, “what were medical practices like in Ancient Egypt?” As a STEM major, I think it would be cool to be working at an intersection between the archaeology of Ancient Egypt and my own life.

How do I know if I’ve already gotten the bivalent booster? I don’t remember which COVID vaccines I’ve gotten. You can’t predict when you might get sick, and being boosted means you’ll be back on your feet faster if you become infected. Schedule your booster when it’s convenient for you. That said, it’s a safe bet that the time required to get your booster is less than the time you’d need to take off if you get sick with COVID while unboosted. In an ideal world, everyone would have enough paid leave to take care of their health. I can’t take time off work to get the booster. are still being hospitalized with it every day. Getting the booster increases the likelihood that your illness will also be mild if you do get infected.Įvery individual’s risk factors for and experiences with COVID are different, and while overall the virus appears to be evolving to cause less severe illness, thousands of people across the U.S. Someone I know had COVID recently and said it wasn’t that bad. And of course, talk through any concerns with your doctor. For example, if you had uncomfortable side effects from Moderna vaccines, try Pfizer for your bivalent booster. If you’re still not sure, consider changing up vaccine brands. After all, your immune system is stronger against COVID now than it was when you got your previous doses. Your experience with the booster won’t necessarily be the same as when you got your prior vaccines. You can also talk to your doctor about taking over-the-counter medications to reduce discomfort. While post-vaccine side effects like fatigue, fever, and chills aren’t enjoyable, they are normal, and experiencing them means that your immune system is working properly. I really don’t want to deal with that again. I felt lousy after my previous COVID shots. Without the updated booster, you’re more likely to experience more severe symptoms that last longer. Studies show it’s doing this well, even with the newer variants. The purpose of the booster is to help you bounce back faster if you do get sick, and to keep you out of the hospital. What’s the point of the booster if I can still get infected? In fact, even as newer variants-like BQ.1, BQ.1.1, and XBB.1.5-become dominant in the U.S., the bivalent boosters are continuing to protect against severe disease, hospitalization, and death. The bivalent boosters are designed to address both the original strain of the virus and the more contagious omicron variants that have emerged since. The virus that causes COVID-19 is much different now than it was when the first vaccines came out in late 2020. The bivalent booster builds upon your previous vaccinations to keep your immune system ready to help you avoid serious illness. Vaccines are effective, but the immunity they give you wears off over time. We asked Keri Althoff, PhD ’08, MPH ’05, an associate professor in Epidemiology, to help us address some of the questions and concerns people may have about getting the bivalent booster.Īnother COVID vaccine? And if it is their own bed, chances are they’re not getting enough covers or there’s too much unwanted physical contact. Even when everyone is in a bed, chances are it’s not their own bed. There’s a ceaseless back and forth between the kids’ room and the parent’s room. Here’s an excerpt:ĭespite the kids having been tucked in for the night, nobody really gets to sleep. Which brings us back to “Sleepytime,” an episode that perfectly captures the long nights of early parenthood. And it never shies away from big feelings and tender, earnest humanity (albeit in dog form). “Bluey” always leads with imagination, humor, and relatable life situations. Any episode where Bluey and Bingo pretend to be their Grannie alter egos Rita and Janet is highly amusing. There’s an entire episode focused on Bluey and Bingo trying not to let a balloon touch the ground for a game called Keepy Uppy. Waiting for take out (or, “Takeaway,” rather). A visit to the local home improvement store (it’s called the Hammerbarn – if you’ve been into a Lowes or a Home Depot, it’s the animated version of that). The show focuses on these pockets of everyday experience. We watch a lot of “Bluey” around here, which is easy to do because each episode is less than 10 minutes long. And don’t even get me started on the the stained glass transoms! The alpine-inspired cutouts over the doorways? Whimsical. The mid-century modern light fixture in their living room? The coolest. Like, I’ve never watched an animated show in which I’ve coveted the animated furnishings (except for maybe Peppa Pig’s camper van, which could double as a mobile she shed that I could disappear into whenever the members of my household got too loud or demanding), but I would legit Pin-terest their whole house if I could. They are very imaginative and their parents Bandit and Chili are the type of parents you’d want to be friends with and aspire to be more like as a human. If you, like any reasonable adult who does not have a preschool-aged child in their household, have never heard of “Bluey,” here’s the rundown: “Bluey” is a cartoon on Disney+ about a family of Australian Cattle Dogs who also conveniently live in Australia and eat things like “brekkie” (breakfast) and become indignant when other pups aren’t “playing properly.” Annie now informs me that I’m “not playing properly,” when I’m not playing exactly the way she wants me to, which makes her very difficult to take seriously and also makes me feel a little bit shamed for both not playing “properly” and also not talking fancily. Then the show splits into two points of view: Bingo swimming through space and the rest of the Heeler household (Bluey, Chili, and dad, Bandit) as they struggle to find sleep and stay asleep. The story follows Bingo as she falls asleep and hatches out of an Earth-shaped egg shell into a surreal galactic dreamscape. I don't think they needed to include a lowbrow joke like that in such a beautiful episode.I’m upstairs and the kids are downstairs watching “Bluey.” I can tell from the music that it’s the episode called “Sleepytime” in which Bluey’s mom, Chili, tucks in Bluey’s little sister Bingo for the night after reading her a book about the solar system. There is only one problem I find with this episode, and that's the part where Bingo jumps on her dad, Bandit's crotch, causing him to cry out. The camera angles they use and the animation is superb. Give the episode a watch yourself if you don't believe me. The scene where Bingo flies towards the sun and hears her unseen mother, Chilli's voice saying "Remember, I will always be there for you, even if you can't see me, because I love you." Combined with the beautiful music and wonderfully done animation, this is perhaps the greatest scene I've seen in a children's show. Without much dialogue, the space scenes are just beautifully done and pack an emotional punch. First of all, the music composed by Joff Bush sounds prettier than usual, and the featured music, Planets by Gustav Holst that they use is absolutely stunning in the environment in which it's used, which is space. Showing Bingo's dreams of flying through space with her Floppy, and trying to stay in her bed all night as a big girl, this episode is beautiful. And yes, as an adult male, I did shed some tears upon first viewing. Let's face it.Sleepytime is, in my opinion, the greatest Bluey episode ever made so far, and I cannot wait to see what the crew will do to top this later on in the series' run. Many of the episodes are silly and charming, but then there are a few like this one and some others that just pack a punch and are just.beautiful. That's something that many kids' shows, like Peppa Pig and Caillou, cannot claim. It's a testament to the creators and their talents that they are able to write and create a show aimed at children that all ages can enjoy as well. I enjoy it as an adult without children, and I know many other adults do as well. 3/2/2024 0 Comments Red rocks amphitheatre nightOnce this was shared with me, I understood that it is part of the magic that makes Red Rocks so special. This is considered on the down low when locals tell you this. Red Rocks, after the 10 th row, it is pretty much general admission and fair game to move around. It’s progressive trance – don’t be scared. Listen to this track in the background if you like by Andrew Bayer - ‘Midnight’. If you like, take a moment from this article and fantasize about your Red Rocks and how you know you are going this year or next year – “for sure”. You are now feeling the energy that is this mythical place. The daydreams of the show now cascade over you like an ocean of all the builds and drops that you know are only a few short hour(s) away. You raise your hands to the sky like you won! You are winning in life no matter what when you are at Red Rocks. You haven’t even stepped into the space yet. You look down to the stage, you look to the Rock across from you, and then the Rock behind you to your left. It will now become an annual party pilgrimage. This bucket list on your musical odyssey love affair is now complete. Looking down, not up because you want to get to the top step first and then pick your head up and see what you have been waiting years for. You are alone for these seconds as you let the vibrations pulse through your body with each step. As you look down at the steps that lead you up to Red Rocks, everything melts away. Red Rocks for me is the mecca of all non-festival venues in the World.Īfter checking in for the Meet & Greet, we made our way into the amphitheater. These are the two groups’ music and live shows that changed the course of my life after I saw them. Only Odesza at Red Rocks could match this euphoria of my first show at Red Rocks if I could choose anyone to see. We are here.” I fantasized about my first Red Rocks show for years and out of all the shows it was going to be – Galantis could not have been more special or intense from a personal standpoint. When you leave the Origin Hotel it is a 5 minute drive with no traffic to the first Red Rocks parking lot so getting there for the doors open makes it hassle free. Recommendation #1, get to Red Rocks when doors open for the most epic pictures of an empty Red Rocks Amphitheater with pictures of yourself totally immersed with unobstructed 360 degrees pictures. If you had the time or planned it in advance, then a tour of Coors Brewery would be a fun excursion to say you fit in while in this famous area outside of Denver.Īfter getting back to the Origin, it was time to get ready for the show. It is a 10 minute walk up and down main street. You can't really go wrong anywhere for a meal in Golden. We decided to drive down the hill into the historic town of Golden (original home of Coors Brewery) and have a late lunch. The restaurant attached, NOMAD Taqueria and Beer Garden, has really flavorful food and is super convenient for a great dinner before the short 5 minute drive to the venue. The rooms are very nice and have a Rocky Mountain vibe to them with sliding barn style doors to the bathroom and a reclaimed wood and Edison bulb vibes. If you want the luxury of a short drive to and from “home” afterwards then definitely stay at The Origin. The Origin Hotel is really fantastic aside from being next to the Red Rocks entrance. Red Rocks for any concert I have no doubt is so special, however, for EDM performances it takes on a mythical status. The energy here is so strong and powerful it takes your breath away and this is when it is empty! When it is full of the special people of Red Rocks, it really takes on a supernatural level of cosmic energy and love. The artist is not performing AT Red Rocks but rather FOR Red Rocks. When you see concert videos from Red Rocks it is so clear that it is the most special place in the U.S. Holmes was then based in Paris, in charge, among other things, of monitoring the recovery of the V2 components. The A 88 racer was built in 1946 by Ventnor on Rich Hallet's plans for Colonel Holmes of the US Army Special Services. Soon its productions started to dominate the competition in all racing categories, starting with small and medium displacements like the 135 and 225 C.I. In 1936, the Apels, father and son, filed a patent that would revolutionize the sport of motorboating for nearly half a century: the three-point hydroplane hull. His research quickly placed him at the forefront of progress in the design of hulls to improve their speed potential. The Ventnor yard was founded in 1902 in Atlantic City, New Jersey by Adolf E. This is the case of the Ford V8 "Flathead" for which the Offenhauser firm, renowned for its numerous victories at the Indianapolis 500 Miles, offers a kit that makes the Ford "small block" very competitive in its category. Thanks to the presence of production car engines of this displacement on the market, this category was successful for more than two decades because it was possible to equip a racer at affordable costs while obtaining good performances thanks to preparers. racing class was created in 1931 by the American Power Boat Association to support the sporting activity affected by the financial crisis of 1929. She still doesn't realize what's going on, but as Bubbles, Buttercup, and Townsville's citizens look and laugh as well, she turns to a glass window and sees her horrendously butchered hair revealing the reason why everyone is laughing at her. However, instead of heeding her warnings, it laughs at her hair. When the girls arrive, Blossom berates the Evil Eye for what it's doing and provides an ultimatum. Just then, a giant floating black ball with eyes on all sides arrives, vaporizing everything in sight with deadly eye beams, including tankers, water towers, and some fighter jets scrambled to attack it. When we finally get to see the results of their work, even the narrator is laughing at her atrocious haircut. So she flies out downtown, not wanting to deal with the girls, which is when they fall over laughing. Blossom picks it up as per usual, but when she orders the girls to "move out," they can just barely hold in their laughter, but they won't tell her what it is. Shocked at what's befallen them, they casually state that they just have to trim it up a bit, but all that does is worsen the situation. " Give me a real hairdo!" Blossom demands, so they begin combing out the tangles, but when Buttercup finds a knot, she begins to tug on it, subsequently ripping out a large portion of her hair. The two of them groom Blossom's beautiful hair until they end up angering her with their ridiculous styles, including a racetrack with hairpin turns, and Fluffy the Hair Bunny. Bubbles and Buttercup look at each other and smile as they silently form ideas.īubbles and Buttercup brushing Blossom's long hair But when Blossom wakes up, her hair is absolutely perfect: It's straight, luscious and shiny, the qualities any sane girl would want in her hair. Then Buttercup wakes up, her hair is equally a mess. Bubbles is the first to rise, her hair in tangles. It started off like any other morning: the sun rose up and shone through the girls' windows, awakening them from their slumber. Bubbles along with Buttercup give her a bad haircut, she gets ridiculed by everybody in the city, when an all-seeing monster appears. The upcoming remake is currently being penned by Heather Regnier of Veronica Mars and Diablo Cody of Juno. After Buttercup unwittingly rips one of Blossom's knots. The series was also adapted for the big screen in the form of a feature film titled The Powerpuff Girls Movie, which was released in 2002 and praised for its visuals. It won several awards during its run and was a favorite among younger children. The series was then developed by the network and made its official debut in 1998, running for almost seven years before concluding with its final episode in March 2005. The Powerpuff Girls was originally created by McCracken in 1992, but its first pilot only aired on Cartoon Network in 1995. It remains to be seen whether the powerful trio will reunite to protect the world from evil once again. However, as an adult, she will be seen as someone who has tried to run away from her identity of being a superhero and has spent most of her life trying to be as anonymous as possible. She found ways to do things that weren’t always approved by her sisters, or even their father Professor Utonium. Finally, Perrault has been cast as Buttercup, who was always the rebellious one in the group. In 2017, Google announced that Google Play would begin to require apps to target a recent Android version. The first release under the numerical order format was Android 10, which was released September 2019. Google announced in August 2019 they were ending the confectionery theming scheme to use numerical ordering for future versions. The project manager, Ryan Gibson, conceived using a confectionery-themed naming scheme for public releases, starting with Android 1.5 Cupcake. The code names "Astro Boy" and "Bender" were tagged internally on some of the early pre-1.0 milestone builds and were never used as the actual code names of the 1.0 and 1.1 releases of the OS. Android 1.0 and 1.1 were not released under specific code names. The first public release of Android 1.0 occurred with the release of the T-Mobile G1 (aka HTC Dream) in October 2008. Both the operating system itself and the SDK were released along with their source code, as free software under the Apache License. These releases were done through software emulation as physical devices did not exist to test the operating system. Several public beta versions of the SDK were released. The beta was released on November 5, 2007, while the software development kit (SDK) was released on November 12, 2007. There were at least two internal releases of the software inside Google and the Open Handset Alliance (OHA) before the beta version was released. The development of Android started in 2003 by Android, Inc., which was purchased by Google in 2005. 3/2/2024 0 Comments Nova instal the newAddressed an issue that could cause code structure headers to become scrambled in some circumstances.Code structure headers are no longer misaligned when using specific screen resolutions or font sizes.Multi-line selections are now drawn as expected on macOS 14 “Sonoma” when line wrapping is disabled. The “Editor” main menu item and its counterparts (“Terminal”, “Preview”, etc.) now resize properly when swapping tab types on macOS 14.Improved text layout performance of very long lines containing differing syntax highlighting attributes when line wrapping is disabled.First Launch: Resolved a layout issue with the Coda 2 migration pane in German and French localizations.First Launch: Action button titles are no longer clipped on macOS 14.File Browser: The “Servers” and “Quick Connect” tab labels are no longer clipped on macOS 14.File Browser: Fixed drawing of the breadcrumbs in light themes when “Show File Count” is enabled on macOS 14.File Transfers: Fixed an issue with the conflict resolution sheet background color on macOS 14.Color Pops: Resolved a button label layout issue with the German localization.Terminal: Cursor position is now properly reset after a CSI 3J.Terminal: lines no longer draw outside of the terminal region when GPU acceleration is disabled on macOS 14.SFTP/SSH: Implemented a security fix for CVE-2023-48795, which could allow an attacker to downgrade the security of SSH connections.Addressed an issue that could cause the parser to enter an infinite loop when highlighting or indexing certain files.Scroll bar annotation markers now adjust properly during window resizes.Resolved a potential crash when using Find -> Replace All in plain text documents. 3/1/2024 0 Comments 99 percent invisible bookLocated in Cairo Illinois, the largest of these mills covered nearly 40 acres, and the sheer variety of homes it shipped out was staggering. Sears prefabricated almost all of these homes in giant mills situated across the country. The resulting Sears Modern Home Program was a hit, particularly after the end of World War I, the influx of returning veterans triggered a need for more housing. Why should newlyweds move into old homes filled with old things when they could move into new homes and fill them with new things from Sears‽ Sears looked at this idyllic scene of families living in harmony and saw … a wasted opportunity. The reigning paradigm of the middle class was the Victorian home with all of these different little rooms for different family members. Most American families at the time were still living in multi-generational housing. And it’s around this time that Richard Sears saw a way to sell even more. For example, according to lore, he intentionally made the Sears Roebuck catalog a little shorter and narrower than the Montgomery Ward one on the theory that it would naturally get stacked on top.īy 1907, Sears and Roebuck were selling the then equivalent of $1.3 billion of merchandise to American families every year. Sears was not the first company to offer kit homes or a mail-order catalog, but it came to dominate the mail-order market in part because its founder, Richard Sears, was that kind of expert that so many people would claim to be over the course of the 20th century but very few actually were: he was a marketing genius. But it’s also a chapter of housing history that was almost lost. Long before the advent of housing developments and the modern suburb, it was the Sears kit home that gave Americans their first taste of 20th-century domestic life. In so doing, they helped usher out the era of the custom site-built house, replacing it with the promise that homes could be standardized and affordable. Sears would go on to ship out some 75,000 homes across the country. Sears promised that, working without a carpenter and only rudimentary skills, a person could finish their Sears mail-order home in less than 90 days. The lumber came pre-cut, kind of like a giant Ikea set, along with an instruction booklet. This seal was to be broken on arrival by the new owner, who would open up their boxcar to find over 10,000 pieces of framing lumber, 20,000 cedar shakes, and almost everything else needed to build the home - all the doors, even the doorknobs. From 1908 to 1940, the Sears Modern Homes Program offered complete mail-order houses to the would-be homeowner - what would come to be called “kit homes.” Customers could select from dozens of different models in Sears Modern Homes Catalog, order blueprints, send in a check, and a few weeks later everything they needed would arrive in a train car, its door secured with a small red wax seal (just like the seal on the back of a letter). |
